LONDON (Reuters) - Nick Abendanon was released from England's squad with a toe injury Wednesday, further limiting manager Martin Johnson's fullback options for the four November tests.
The Bath player has been advised to rest for two to four weeks, the Rugby Football Union (RFU) said in a statement, meaning he is likely to miss the tests against the Pacific Islands, Australia, South Africa and New Zealand.
Josh Lewsey, recalled to the squad as a fullback after not playing since the 2007 World Cup, was among eight players released back to their clubs Tuesday.
Mathew Tait is struggling with a hamstring injury, meaning there could be a first cap for London Irish's Delon Armitage, another late call-up.
Olly Barkley, Tim Payne, George Chuter, Jordan Crane, Dan Hipkiss, Shane Geraghty and Peter Richards were the others released Tuesday under the RFU's agreement with the clubs.
All will return to England's training camp in Surrey on Sunday ahead of the November 8 opener against the Islanders.
Just how many good ENLISH fullbacks are there out there?
If Chris can get more game time playing at fullback he will make it. This brings in the problem that if we cannot give him that time we have a good chance of losing him to another club.
Maybe he can intechange with Chris Latham to ensure he develops. Which means that only 1 other winger is needed on the field, could be a problem.
